Guided Waterfront History Walking Tour

$35.00 per person
Thursday, October 20th, 9:30am to 5:00pm

Total walking time 45 minutes. Return from Pier 21 by shuttle bus. Tour price includes entrance to the two museums and the brewery tour. Lunch price is not included in tour price.

9:30am – 1:00pm: Take advantage of Halifax’s wonderful waterfront boardwalk right outside our conference hotel to visit three “not to be missed” landmarks. Our first stop will be at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the oldest and largest maritime museum in Canada with a collection of over 30,000 artifacts, including displays related to the Halifax Explosion of 1917, the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and a large gallery depicting the “Age of Sail”. From there, we will visit Alexander Keith’s Brewery. Founded in 1820 it is one of the oldest commercial breweries in North America. Actors in period costume will lead us back in time to learn about the beer, the brewery and life in Halifax in 1863. While there you can sample the beer.

1pm – 2:00pm: Lunch, at the Red Stag Tavern in the Brewery building, is not included in the tour price.

2pm – 5:00pm: Walk to Pier 21 – Canada’s Immigration Museum. Here you will learn the unique stories of immigration throughout our history, and see tributes to the 1.5 million immigrants, war brides, displaced people, evacuee children and military personnel who passed through Pier 21 from 1928 to 1971, destined for new homes across Canada. The museum features interactive exhibits and multimedia presentations, of interest whether you are an immigrant or the descendant of an immigrant.

4:45pm – 5:00pm: Return from Pier 21 by shuttle bus to conference Hotel

Peggy’s Cove/Lunenburg Bus Tour

$75.00 per person
Friday, October 21st, 8:30am to 5:00pm

Travel with us by motor coach to two popular locations in “Canada’s Ocean Playground”. Our first stop at Peggy’s Cove, located at the eastern entrance to St Margaret’s Bay, is the location of a small active fishing community and tourist destination tucked into the granite rocks of the Nova Scotia coast. The famous lighthouse has been a beacon for sailors since 1914, when it replaced a wooden structure built to mark the entrance to the bay.

After a look around the village, our bus will take us to the Town of Lunenburg, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 and located on the western shore of beautiful Mahone Bay. Lunenburg is known for its shipbuilding and is the birthplace and home port of the famous Bluenose and Bluenose II, the schooner depicted on the Canadian dime. We will have lunch in Lunenburg before our visit to the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. This museum commemorates the fishing heritage of the Atlantic coast of Canada and has recently been named one of the top 1000 best places to see in the USA and Canada before you die. Housed in brightly painted red buildings, with floating vessels at wharf side, the Museum offers a host of attractions, including an extensive aquarium and exhibits. There will be time to explore the Lunenburg waterfront before we return on our bus to Halifax. Cost of the tour includes entrance to the Fisheries Museum and a lunch voucher.
