Halifax 2011: Competitions
The "Competitions Room" will be an exciting area open to all attendees - whether you will be competing or just viewing. But don't just view; we all have hobbies that we excel at: fill in the entry form and show us your strengths!

Note that the competitions are judged by an independent panel, separate and apart from the Conference.
The various competitions (including the Youth Note Card Contest) are organized by division, as described below.
DIVISION 1: Training Aids
Items for use in the classroom to assist in the presentation of a CPS lecture.
DIVISION 2: Navigational Aids
A piece of equipment designed, made and used by a member to aid in the navigation or piloting of a vessel. Entries must include a brief description of the item indicating its use and purpose.
DIVISION 3: Crafts
Section 1: General Crafts
Entries should have a nautical theme and be of the entrant’s original design. The only exception will be for models or needlework; in these cases, a copy of the plans shall be submitted with the entry. All other entries must be accompanied by a brief description of how it was made.
Section 2: Presentations
Entries should show creativity of a presentation (table centre or any other theme) for a particular event, e. g. 25th Anniversary Dinner, etc...
DIVISION 4: Scrapbooks
Contest open to single individuals or groups, Squadrons or Districts. The entry shall be a record of an individual or group trip or boating activity, i.e. holiday, Squadron, or District activity.
DIVISION 5: Publications
Section 1: Newsletters
Contest open to District or Squadrons only. Entries shall be in the name of the District or Squadron only.
NOTE: Each entry shall consist of the current year’s publications. Entries from Squadrons must have a card showing when the Squadron received its warrant and the number of members in the Squadron.
Section 2: Personal Stories, Poems and Narratives
This section is for members to relate their personal “boating tales”, adventures, misadventures or other narratives with a boating theme.
DIVISION 6: Visual Arts
Section 1: Photography
Original black and white or colour prints, excluding those that are digitally created. Minimum size 5"x 7".
Section 2: Painting and Drawings
Original works with a nautical theme, in any medium, excluding those that are digitally created Entries should be suitably mounted for hanging.
DIVISION 7: New Media
- Web Sites under the CPS Web Portal Program
- Web Sites outside of the CPS Web Portal Program
Section 1: Best of the Web
The site itself must include information about Squadron or District activities, presented in an entertaining and informative way. Review the website guidelines for each category as they will be used in judging the sites. They can be located on the MultiMedia page under National Committees within the Member’s section of the main CPS website.
The site must be readily accessible on line. Do not supply the website on disk.
Entries must be submitted for this section only by using the interactive form provided on the MultiMedia page under National Committees within the Members section of the main CPS website and within the Conference site.
NOTE: The closing date for web site entries is announced annually by the Committee to enable the judges to review the site prior to the Conference. No entries will be accepted after this date. No entries are accepted at the Conference.
NOTE: Entries for the rest of this Division may be made using the Competitions Entry Form which is available in Acrobat PDF format on the Conference site.
Section 2: Digital Art
Artwork created with digital software.
Original computer files must be submitted. Files must be submitted on disk (CD or Zip100) and disks must be properly labelled with the creator's name, filename, Squadron or District name. File format is restricted to JPEG for ease of viewing by the judges.
Section 3: Digital Presentations
Presentations having content relating to CPS courses and seminars
Presentation files created with readily-available software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, or in HTML or Adobe Acrobat PDF formats. Files must be submitted on disk (CD or Zip100) and disks must be properly labelled with the creator's name, filename, Squadron or District name.
Section 4: Digital Photography
Black and White or Colour prints from a digital camera.

DIVISION 8: Environmental
Entries must show measures taken by a Squadron or District to protect lakes or rivers – newsletters or gatherings, etc...
COMPETITORS PLEASE NOTE: We will do our utmost to display your entry in an appropriate and attractive manner. If the nature of your "submission/entry" is such that it requires a particular or special support, stand or device, please ensure that the necessary equipment is included with your shipment or delivery.
Youth Note Card Contest
The theme is “Keep it Clean…Go Green”.
Now is the time to get working with the youth of your Squadron and submit your entries.

Contest Rules
- The entry must be in colour on poster card; size 10 cm x 13 cm.
- Note cards will be judged for idea more than artistic ability.
- Original art only; computer generated art, photos, professional illustrations, copyright material may not be used.
- The contest entry form must be completed and pasted on the back of the note card. Only one entry drawn by one person please.
- Do not fold art work.
- Judging will be at the Squadron level first, then at District. Six entries per District will be judged at the National Conference, three for each category:
6 to 10, 11 to 14 years old. - All District entries should be given to the Youth Education Committee Chair by the first day of the conference.
